Understanding Klarna Payments

About Klarna

Klarna is the leading global payments and shopping service, providing smarter and more flexible shopping and purchase experiences to 150 million active consumers across more than 500,000 merchants in 45 countries. Klarna offers direct payments, pay-after-delivery options, and instalment plans in a smooth one-click purchase experience that lets consumers pay when and how they prefer to.

How Klarna Works

Customers who select Klarna at the checkout are redirected to Klarna's website to choose their installment plans. After selecting a plan, they are automatically returned to the Cademy platform and the booking is confirmed. Importantly, the full amount of the booking (minus applicable fees) is credited to the course provider's Stripe account upfront, while Klarna manages the collection of payments from the customer.

Compliance with Klarna's Terms

Please be aware that Klarna's terms of service mandate equal pricing for all payment methods chosen by customers. This implies that course providers are not allowed to charge extra fees or higher prices for customers who choose to pay through Klarna. To prevent any possible violations, it is important to ensure that your payment preferences align with these terms.

Klarna Fee Structure

Minisite/Embeds Booking with Klarna:

  • Bookings made through a Minisite or embeds with Klarna will incur a Klarna fee of 4.99% + 35p. This fee is in addition to any Cademy platform fees (if applicable) depending on your active plan.

Marketplace Transaction with Klarna:

  • Bookings made through the Cademy Marketplace with Klarna are subject to a 10% marketplace fee. Additionally, a Klarna fee of 4.99% + 35p is also applied, covering both the Klarna fee and payment processing fee.

Cademy Platform Fees:

  • Free Plan: A 5% platform fee is charged on all successfully paid transactions, including those made through your Minisite, embeds, payment links, invoices, and the Cademy Marketplace, in addition to the Klarna fee.

  • Paid Plans (Pro, Teams): No platform fee is charged, but Klarna fees still apply.

Note: The payment processing fees and the Klarna fee are always paid by the course provider for Klarna payments.

Activating Klarna on Cademy

Initial Setup

Before activating Klarna, make sure that Stripe is already installed as your payment processor. This is a requirement for integrating Klarna with your Cademy courses.

Steps to Activate Klarna

  1. Navigate to Apps: Access the Apps section on your Cademy admin dashboard.

  2. Select Klarna: Look for Klarna among the available apps.

  3. Install Klarna: Click on the install button.

Managing Klarna for Individual Courses

Once Klarna is active, it's available for all courses by default. However, Cademy enables course providers to tailor their payment options:

  1. Select Your Course: Choose the course you wish to edit.

  2. Edit Course Settings: Access 'Edit Course', then proceed to the 'Settings' tab.

  3. Adjust Payment Methods: In 'Advanced Settings', find the 'Payment Methods' section to enable or disable Klarna for that specific course.

Fee Examples with Net Payouts

Minisite / Embeds Booking with Klarna

Example: For a £100 course booked via a minisite or embeds with Klarna.

  • Course Price: £100

  • Klarna Fee: 4.99% of £100 + 35p = £5.34

  • Cademy Platform Fee (Free Plan): 5% of £100 = £5.00

  • Total Fees: £5.34 (Klarna) + £5.00 (Cademy Platform Fee) = £10.34

  • Net Payout to Course Provider: £100 - £10.34 = £89.66

The course provider receives £94.66 after the Klarna fee is deducted for a course booked through a minisite or embeds.

Marketplace Bookings with Klarna

Example: For a £100 course booking through the Cademy marketplace.

  • Course Price: £100

  • Marketplace Fee: 10% of £100 = £10.00

  • Klarna Fee: 4.99% of £100 + 35p = £5.34

  • Cademy Platform Fee (Free Plan): 5% of £100 = £5.00

  • Total Fees: £10.00 (Marketplace Fee) + £5.34 (Klarna) + £5.00 (Cademy Platform Fee) = £20.34

  • Net Payout to Course Provider: £100 - £20.34 = £79.66

The course provider receives £79.66 in a marketplace transaction, after deducting fees for the marketplace, Klarna, and payment processor.
