This guide is for a course provider’s System Admin. Klarna is a separate payment provider offered through your Stripe connection. It decides which customers and purchases qualify and which payment options to offer.
How the payment works
For a successful Klarna payment, the purchase amount is settled to your Stripe balance after applicable fees. Klarna handles the customer’s repayment arrangement. A transfer from Stripe to your bank follows Stripe’s payout process.
This is different from Cademy’s monthly instalments, where the customer pays the course provider in separate payments. See Offer and Manage Monthly Instalments. Enabling Klarna does not set up a Cademy monthly-payment schedule.
Cademy offers Klarna only at checkout, and only when the customer pays the full amount. If the customer chooses to pay a deposit or in monthly instalments, Klarna is not one of the payment methods offered.
The pages where a customer pays an invoice or a payment request can offer card and PayPal, but not Klarna.
Before you enable Klarna
Connect Stripe. See the Stripe connection guide. In Apps > Stripe > Connected Stripe Accounts, identify the connection with Default status.
Enable Klarna for that default Stripe account in Stripe’s payment method settings. Cademy checks the default account’s Klarna capability during installation. If a course uses a different Stripe account, Klarna must also be enabled for that account to accept its payments.
Read Stripe’s Klarna requirements. These include business eligibility, customer eligibility and restrictions on adding fees or higher prices for Klarna purchases.
Check your course currency. Cademy does not offer Klarna for Malaysian ringgit (MYR) or South African rand (ZAR). Stripe and Klarna also apply their own eligibility rules.
Do not add a fee or higher price because the customer chooses Klarna. Before offering it, review your fee settings and the requirements applying to your business.
On the Free plan, Settings > Payments > Cademy Platform Fee includes Absorb Cademy Platform Fees. Turn this on if you need to stop passing the Cademy platform fee to the customer. This switch saves immediately and controls the Cademy platform fee, not Stripe’s processing rate. It does not by itself confirm compliance with all Klarna requirements.
Enable Klarna
Installing Klarna makes it available for course payments unless the course’s payment settings or currency restrictions exclude it. Review the course settings below if you only want to offer it on selected courses. The customer’s payment must still meet the provider’s eligibility requirements.
Sign in to the correct business in the Admin Dashboard, then open Apps > Klarna.
Select Install. Read This may affect your course payment options, then select Continue with Install.
Check for Klarna app installed. The installed app displays Uninstall instead of Install.
If installation fails, check the default Stripe connection and whether Klarna is enabled for that default account. If both are in place and installation still fails, send Cademy Support your business name and the error shown. Do not send Stripe keys or customer payment details.
Choose whether a course offers Klarna
In the Admin Dashboard, open the course and select Edit Course.
Open Settings, then Payments. Find Payment Methods.
Tick Klarna to offer it, or untick it to stop offering it for this course. Keep at least one available payment method selected.
Select Save in the course editor and check that the changes save successfully.
The app must be installed and the payment must meet the relevant currency and eligibility requirements. Klarna being enabled on a course does not guarantee approval for every customer or offer a fixed number of repayments.
Fees and refunds
For direct course bookings, the payment provider’s processing fee is separate from the Cademy platform fee. The Cademy platform fee depends on your plan, and an account-specific agreement can change it. See Understand Cademy Plans, Limits and Fees. A plan with no Cademy platform fee does not make payment processing free.
Open Settings > Billing & Usage to check your Cademy plan. Check any account-specific fee agreement separately. On Free, find Absorb Cademy Platform Fees under Settings > Payments > Cademy Platform Fee. This setting controls the Cademy platform fee, not the payment provider’s processing fee.
Check Stripe’s current Klarna pricing and your account agreement. Do not calculate an expected payout from a fixed example without checking the fees, currency and taxes applying to that payment.
To return all or part of a Klarna payment, follow Cancellations & Refunds. Cademy processes this refund through the original Stripe payment. Klarna handles changes to the customer’s repayment arrangement after the refund is processed. Read Stripe’s Klarna refund and dispute guidance. Do not promise that a refund is complete solely because it was requested.
Stop offering Klarna
To stop offering Klarna on one course, untick it in that course’s Settings > Payments > Payment Methods and save. To remove the option across the business, open Apps > Klarna and select Uninstall. This action removes the app immediately; it is not a cancellation or refund of an existing order.
Frequently asked questions
Does Klarna guarantee the booking is confirmed?
No. A customer must complete the payment process, and any course approval requirements still apply. Check the order’s saved payment and approval status rather than treating a return from Klarna as proof.
Can I use the same Stripe account for card and Klarna payments?
Yes, when Klarna is enabled for that connected Stripe account. If you select a different Stripe account on a course, check that account’s Klarna eligibility too. Installing Klarna does not enable the capability on every Stripe account.
