Reset or Correct a Learner's Lesson Progress

Mark lessons completed or not started for one learner, reset their progress and see how it changes completion, certificates and CPD.

Written by Artur Binzaru

This guide is for course providers who need to reset a learner’s progress on an on-demand or blended course, or correct it, for example to mark lessons completed or not started for one learner. You work from the learner’s Registration, meaning their place on the course or course date, in Cademy Admin.

You need the System Admin role, or the Course Owner or Facilitator role with access to the course or date. A change applies to the selected Registration only, not to other places the same learner holds.

Important: This is an administrator correction. It can mark a lesson Completed without the learner passing a required quiz, finishing a SCORM package (uploaded online learning content), submitting a required form or completing earlier locked lessons. It does not create or remove quiz answers, scores or attempts, change SCORM results or submit a form. A change can alter course Completion and issue a certificate, CPD award or completion feedback request when the course is set up for that.

Reset Someone's Progress on an On-Demand Course or Module

Cademy has no single button that resets a learner’s whole course. To reset progress, set each lesson back to Not Started on the learner’s Registration. To reset a module, do this for each lesson in that section.

  1. Open the learner’s Registration: a System Admin can use the main Registrations page; others select Courses, open the course and select Registrants. Select the learner’s row.

  2. In the Registration panel, expand Progress, then the section (module) that contains the lessons.

  3. Select the status badge of a lesson and choose Mark Not Started. The change saves straight away.

  4. Repeat for each lesson to reset, then check the percentage beside Progress.

Mark Not Started removes that lesson’s start and completion from the Registration. The learner’s recorded learning time, quiz attempts and SCORM results stay. Lessons you do not change keep their status. A certificate or CPD award already issued is not revoked.

Reset a Failed Student So They Can Restart Part of a Course

To let a student start again from a certain point, mark each lesson they should redo as Not Started, as described above. Lessons you do not change keep their status, so the student can carry on from the first lesson you reset. If they failed a quiz, also read the next section: resetting lessons does not give them another quiz attempt.

Reset the Whole Module After a Student Failed a Quiz

Mark every lesson in that section Not Started, as described above. This does not give a student who failed a quiz another attempt, because quiz attempts are not removed. If the student has used all their attempts, they still see the maximum-retakes message after a reset. To let them try again, give the quiz more retakes or mark their latest attempt as passed. To let them continue without passing, mark the quiz’s lesson Completed. See Can I Reset a Learner's Quiz Attempts? for each option.

Change One Lesson's Status (Mark Completed, In Progress or Not Started)

  1. Log in to your provider account. A System Admin can open the main Registrations page. Alternatively, select Courses, open a course you can access and select Registrants.

  2. Find the learner, check the course and date, and select the right Registration row. To review all learners across lessons instead, see See Each Learner's Lesson Progress in a Course.

  3. In the Registration panel, expand Progress, then the section containing the lesson.

  4. Check the lesson name and select its status badge. Choose Mark Completed, Mark In Progress or Mark Not Started. The choice that matches the current status is greyed out. The change saves straight away; there is no Save button.

  5. If a window titled Complete All Lessons? appears, read it, then select Mark Completed to confirm that one lesson or Cancel to leave it unchanged.

  6. Wait for Lesson progress updated. The lesson controls are unavailable until the save finishes. Check the lesson badge and the percentage beside Progress.

  7. Refresh or reopen the Registration and check the lesson and the separate Completion badge. Completion and awards update in the background. If there is an error, check the record before you repeat the change.

The lesson status menu in a learner’s Registration Progress

Open the lesson’s status badge inside the Registration’s Progress section. The current status is greyed out in the menu.

The Complete All Lessons? window appears when completing this lesson would finish every published lesson and the course issues certificates automatically. Despite its title, it confirms only the selected lesson.

Complete All Lessons confirmation naming the Course Feedback lesson, with Cancel and Mark Completed buttons

The confirmation names the selected lesson and offers Cancel and Mark Completed.

To check whether the learner submitted a form, expand Progress and the section containing the lesson. A submitted form appears under its own name with a Submitted badge; hover over the badge for the date. System Admins and Course Owners can select the form name to open the response; Facilitators can see the entry but cannot open it. A lesson you mark Completed does not show that the learner submitted its form. See Find and Manage Form Responses (Submitted Answers).

Quiz submissions also appear under the quiz’s name. To review or mark answers, see View Quiz or Test Results and Mark Answers.

The submitted form is listed by name under its lesson, with a Submitted badge.

What Mark Completed, Mark In Progress and Mark Not Started Do

  • Completed: the lesson counts as completed for this Registration. If it has no completion time yet, Cademy records the current time; you cannot choose an earlier date.

  • In Progress: the lesson keeps its start, but its completion is cleared and it no longer counts as completed.

  • Not Started: the lesson’s start and completion are removed from the Registration. Learning time, quiz records and SCORM records are not reset.

Only published lessons count towards the percentage; draft or deleted lessons do not. There is no control here to change every lesson together. The learner’s later activity updates progress again, so a correction is not a permanent lock.

A correction does not extend the learner’s access or change the course’s publication, lesson schedule or settings. It is not proof the learner can open the content now.

If the Registration came from an Order (a booking or purchase), a lesson marked Completed or In Progress counts as course progress in the customer’s own account. While any lesson has one of those statuses, the person who booked cannot edit, replace or remove that participant, or transfer the place when it is their own, and the participant cannot change their own name or course-specific answers. See Manage the People on a Course You Booked and Edit Your Details for a Course You Are Attending.

How Changing Lesson Progress Affects Course Completion

A lesson’s In Progress label is different from the Registration’s Completion. A started lesson does not count as completed. Completion uses completed published lessons and, on blended courses, attendance.

  • On-demand: 100% lesson progress makes the Registration Completed. At least one published lesson is needed. Resetting lessons returns Completion to In Progress or Not Started.

  • Blended: 100% lesson progress is not enough while live-session attendance is missing. Check that every session is marked Attended. If the course has no published online lessons, attendance is enough.

The percentage is rounded to a whole number, and Completion uses the rounded figure. On a course with 200 or more published lessons, progress reaches 100% while one lesson is still unfinished, so the Registration can become Completed, and an automatic certificate can be issued, before every lesson is Completed. The Complete All Lessons? window does not appear in that case.

Wait for the update, then refresh and check the result. Do not switch accurate progress back and forth to force an update. An imported or older completion is kept until new attendance or completed-lesson evidence is saved.

Corrections keep the Registration’s first Completion Date. This is different from a lesson’s own completion time. For the full rules, see Check Whether a Learner Has Completed a Course.

How Resetting or Correcting Progress Affects Certificates and CPD

A correction that makes the Registration Completed can lead to a certificate or CPD (continuing professional development) award when the course settings, your plan and the record allow it. It goes through the same check as progress the learner records themselves, so it can send the same certificate emails and completion feedback request. Certificate emails can reach the learner and the person who booked, depending on the notification settings. A saved update does not guarantee that an award was issued or an email delivered.

The learner does not see the Congratulations window after an Admin correction. It appears only when the learner completes a lesson themselves and their on-demand course progress reaches 100%.

Resetting progress does not revoke an issued certificate or CPD award, or recall an email. To withdraw an award, revoke it separately: see Issue a Certificate Manually or in Bulk for a certificate and Set Up and Award CPD Points or Hours for a CPD award. Revoking does not change lesson progress, attendance or Completion.

An active award is not duplicated when Completion returns to Completed. A revoked award can be issued again on a later completion check if the evidence still completes the Registration; an automatic certificate issued again after a revocation does not send the usual emails. For certificate settings, see Set Up Automatic Certificates for a Course.

Why the Lesson Progress Controls Are Missing or Unavailable

  • Progress is missing: check that this is an on-demand or blended course with lessons. The Registration panel hides the section when the course has no lessons.

  • This course has no online lesson content. Check that you opened the right course and that it has published lessons.

  • Unable to load course data. or Unable to load lessons. Refresh or reopen the record. If the message stays, ask Cademy Support to check the Registration and course.

  • A menu choice is greyed out: the lesson already has that status. If all lesson controls are unavailable, wait for the current save to finish.

  • The Registration is Cancelled: lesson progress cannot be changed while it is cancelled.

  • The Registration is missing: check the account, course, date, search and filters, and choose All Registrations where available. Ask a System Admin to check your access to the course or date. Avoid creating a duplicate Registration.

  • Failed to update lesson progress: refresh the Registration and check whether the lesson changed. If it is still wrong, contact Cademy Support with the Registration reference, the lesson name and the error before you try again.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I mark every lesson complete for a learner at once?
No. The Registration panel changes one lesson at a time. The Complete All Lessons? window confirms the selected last lesson; it is not a button that completes every lesson.

Can I choose a different completion date?
No. Cademy records the time of the change if the lesson has no completion time yet. The Registration’s first Completion Date is separate and stays through corrections. Ask Cademy Support to check a disputed date.

Does Mark Completed pass a quiz for the learner?
No. It changes lesson progress without creating or changing quiz answers, scores or attempts, and it does not record or reset SCORM results. For other ways to let a learner who failed a quiz continue, see Can I Reset a Learner's Quiz Attempts?

Why is a blended Registration still In Progress at 100% lesson progress?
Every live session must also be marked Attended. Check each session, correct only wrong marks, then refresh Completion.

Why does the learner still have a certificate after I reset their progress?
Changing lesson progress does not revoke awards or recall emails. Revoke an award separately only when needed; see How Resetting or Correcting Progress Affects Certificates and CPD.

Can I change lesson progress on a cancelled Registration?
No, not while it is Cancelled. Ask Cademy Support about a wrong record. Other parts of the Registration are not affected by this limit.
