This guide helps course providers add quizzes to lessons, choose how answers are marked, and review submitted work. A quiz contains one or more questions inside a lesson. The learner submits those answers together as a quiz response.
Course and permission needed: Quizzes are available in On-demand online course and Blended course lessons. System Admins and Course Owners can edit course content. Facilitators cannot open the course editor.
These steps apply to the newer course content editor, where a lesson has a / content menu and a Quiz block with Edit Quiz. Some existing courses still use the older editor. If those controls are absent or you see a migration message, contact Cademy Support before changing existing assessments. Editing a course and reviewing an assigned response are separate permissions.
Add a quiz to a lesson
Type /q in the lesson editor and choose Quiz. The populated card shows sample settings, not defaults.
Go to admin.cademy.io and select Courses. Open the intended on-demand or blended course and select Edit Course.
Open Contents, then open an existing lesson. To create a lesson first, follow the lesson guide linked below.
In an empty lesson, select Quiz. If the lesson already has content, type / on an empty line and select Quiz. Select Edit Quiz on its card.
Enter a quiz title. Select Add Question, choose the question type and enter its question and answer details.
Open the question’s Question Settings sliders button for its answer rules, description, feedback or notes. For Multiple Choice with several correct options, enable Allow multiple answers before marking those options. Select Done to apply the settings.
For Multiple Choice, use Mark as Correct on the intended correct options. Then use Mark as Incorrect on any preselected option that should not be accepted. A new question initially marks Option 1 correct; at least one option must remain correct.
Repeat for each question. Use a question’s drag handle to change its position.
Select Quiz Settings. Configure grading, attempts, completion and notifications as described below, then select Done.
Select the main Save. It saves the quiz, its parent lesson and pending course changes. Reopen the saved quiz and check its questions and settings. If a save reports an error, check what was saved before repeating the change.
Select Edit Quiz on the quiz card.
For sections, lessons, other content blocks, saving and publishing, read Create and Edit Lessons and Course Content.
Choose a question type from Add Question. Select Manual in Quiz Settings when a person must review Long Text or File Upload answers.
Choose a question type
Add Question offers five question types. The Marking setting determines whether answers wait for manual review.
For ordinary questions created in this editor, the learner must complete every answer before selecting Submit Answers. A File Upload answer also needs its uploads to finish and the required number of files. An enabled Submit Answers button does not confirm that the answers were submitted successfully.
Multiple Choice: enter the answer options. For more than one correct option, open Question Settings and turn on Allow multiple answers first. Answer Is Correct When offers All Correct Options Selected, then Any Correct Option Selected. Select Done, mark the intended options correct, then unmark an unwanted preselected option. With multiple answers off, selecting another correct option replaces the previous one. Selecting an incorrect option makes a multiple-answer response incorrect under either matching rule.
Short Answer: enter the Correct Answer. In Question Settings, Answer must match exactly makes case and internal characters matter; leading and trailing spaces are still ignored. With it off, matching ignores case and removes characters other than the letters A–Z. Use exact matching when punctuation, digits or accented letters must distinguish answers; use Number for a numerical answer.
Number: enter the Correct Answer. In Question Settings, use Tolerance to allow a range. For example, a correct answer of 10 with tolerance 2 accepts answers from 8 to 12, inclusive.
Long Text: in Question Settings, set Minimum Word Count, Maximum Word Count and optional Answer Placeholder. Automatic marking checks its word-count rules; manual submissions still need a person to assess the answer and its length.
File Upload: in Question Settings, add Upload Instructions, then set Minimum Number of Files, Maximum Number of Files and Maximum File Size (MB). The size limit applies to each file. Select Done after changing the question settings.
Each question can include an optional Description. For File Upload, this field is called Upload Instructions.
In Question Settings, an Internal Note gives guidance to people reviewing the submission. They open it under Assessor Notes; learners do not see it. Delete Question removes that question from the quiz. Review existing responses before structural question changes, as explained in the editing section below. Select Done to apply other settings, then the main Save to keep the quiz changes.
Use Question Settings for answer rules, feedback and an internal note. Select Done, then save the quiz.
Feedback When Correct and Feedback When Incorrect are available for Multiple Choice, Short Answer and Number questions. These are fixed messages that learners see with the marked result.
After an automatically marked submission, the learner sees the fixed feedback for each question and the overall result.
Choose how the quiz is marked
Choose grading, retakes and completion requirements in Quiz Settings. The values shown are sample settings.
Open Quiz Settings. Under Grading, set Pass Mark and use Marking to choose one of these options. Select Done after changing settings, then the main Save.
Automatic Where Possible: Cademy checks Multiple Choice, Short Answer and Number answers against the rules you set, then shows the marked result after a successful submission. It saves a response but does not create an Inbox conversation for manual review. The learner sees Quiz Passed or Quiz Failed with their score under the quiz in the lesson. To read the response yourself, open it from the learner’s Registration, as described under “Find a submitted response on the learner’s Registration” below.
Manual: the whole submitted quiz waits for review. The learner sees Answers Submitted until an authorised reviewer marks it.
Long Text and File Upload with automatic marking: Cademy does not judge the meaning or quality of these answers. Automatic Where Possible accepts a Long Text answer that meets its word-count rules and a File Upload answer that meets its file rules. Choose Manual when a person must assess their content.
Set scoring and retakes
Pass Mark: enter a percentage from 0 to 100. Automatic marking gives each question equal weight. The learner passes when their score, rounded to a whole number, meets or exceeds this percentage.
Manual marking: the reviewer marks answers correct or incorrect. Cademy calculates a score, but the reviewer chooses the overall Mark as Fail or Mark as Pass result.
Allow Retakes: enable it to offer further attempts after failure while the chosen limit permits. The options are Unlimited, Up to 1, Up to 2, Up to 3, Up to 5 and Up to 10. A numbered limit counts failed submitted attempts, including the first failure; it is not that many extra retries. In particular, Up to 1 leaves no retry after the first failure, although the learner’s quiz header reads “1 retake allowed”. A learner who has passed cannot keep answering the same submission.
After a failed attempt, the learner sees the remaining attempt allowance when another attempt is available. Once the limit is reached, the quiz shows a maximum-attempts message instead. Check a saved quiz’s actual settings; a new quiz starts with automatic marking, a 50% pass mark and unlimited retakes.
Control lesson completion and failure notifications
Required to Complete the Lesson: the learner must pass this quiz before completing the lesson. A manual submission waiting for review is not a pass. Other required content or access conditions can also prevent completion.
Notify Me When a Student Fails: emails the course’s assigned facilitators after a failed attempt when this option is enabled. It is not an email only to the person who enabled the setting. The email is sent again each time you save Mark as Fail on a response.
Require the quiz when submission is part of the lesson. A new quiz has Required to Complete the Lesson switched off. With it off, the quiz itself does not require the learner to submit before completing the lesson. Cademy attempts to save draft answers when the learner leaves a question; learners should check the Answers last saved status. Draft answers are not submitted work available for manual review.
Preview and test the quiz
Select Preview as Student to inspect the saved quiz layout.
Save the course at least once, then open Courses > course > Edit Course > Contents and the intended lesson or quiz.
Select Preview as Student from Contents, the lesson editor or the Quiz editor.
If Save Before Previewing? appears, choose Cancel to stay in the editor, Preview Without Saving for the saved version, or Save & Preview to save pending changes first.
Check the saved questions and layout in the preview. A Draft lesson can be shown here even though ordinary learners cannot access it.
Admin preview does not submit the quiz.
The quiz shows Previewing as admin. Responses are disabled. Use it to check how the quiz looks, but not submission, automatic marking, manual review, retakes or saved progress.
Admin preview shows the layout. It does not test submissions or saved learner progress.
To test the complete flow with a real learner Registration, follow Test a Course as a Learner.
Review and mark a manual submission
A Quiz Response conversation in the Inbox. The overall result is the reviewer’s choice, so it can differ from the Quiz Score.
Go to admin.cademy.io, select Inbox and open the learner’s Quiz Response conversation. Check the learner, course and lesson before marking. System Admins can review the provider account’s conversations; other staff need access to that conversation. Having an Inbox menu does not give every Facilitator access to every response.
Review each answer. For an uploaded file, select its filename to open it, or Download File to download it. Open Assessor Notes if the question includes an Internal Note.
Use Mark as Correct or Mark as Incorrect for each answer. Review the Quiz Score; the overall pass or fail remains your decision.
Select Give Feedback to add a message for this learner’s submission. If feedback already exists, edit its Feedback field.
Choose the intended result: Mark as Fail or Mark as Pass. After changing answer marks or feedback, the buttons show Save & Mark as Fail and Save & Mark as Pass. These actions save the result.
Check the resulting Quiz response marked as Failed or Quiz response marked as Passed message. If saving fails or the result is unclear, reopen the response and check its saved state before repeating an action.
Give Feedback applies to this submitted response, separate from the fixed feedback on each question. The learner sees it with the marked result and Cademy emails them when the manual result is saved. Each later save emails the learner again, including when you mark the response again or save changed feedback. If the result is failed, the learner can try again only when retakes are allowed and attempts remain.
Passing a manually marked quiz does not complete the lesson automatically. The learner must return to the lesson and select Complete & Continue, or Mark as Completed on the final lesson, once its other completion requirements are met.
The same applies to an automatically marked quiz: a pass does not complete the lesson. Each completed published lesson counts towards the learner’s course Completion; see Understand Course Completion Status.
Find a submitted response on the learner’s Registration
Submitted responses are also listed on the learner’s Registration, whether Cademy marked them automatically or they wait for manual marking. This is where you read an automatically marked response, which has no Inbox conversation.
Open the learner’s Registration. Find and Manage Course Registrations explains how to find it. From a Quiz Response conversation, you can select View Registration instead; the button appears only when the response is linked to a Registration.
In the Registration panel, expand Lesson Progress, then select the name of the course section that holds the lesson.
Under the lesson, each submitted attempt has its own Quiz Submission line. Its badge shows Awaiting Marking, or Passed or Failed with the score.
Select Quiz Submission to open Quiz Results. It shows the learner’s answers with the same marking controls as the Inbox view.
The Mark as Fail and Mark as Pass buttons in Quiz Results save a result for that response, including for one that Cademy marked automatically. Saving there sends the same emails as in the Inbox: the learner of a manual response is emailed again, and Mark as Fail sends the failed-quiz email again when that option is on. An automatically marked response has no conversation, so marking it from Quiz Results sends the learner no email. Close Quiz Results without selecting them when you only want to read the answers. Lesson Progress lists published lessons only, and draft answers are not listed.
Edit or delete a quiz
Use the trash button on the Quiz block to remove it, then select Save and review any deletion confirmation.
To edit, open Courses > course > Edit Course > Contents, open the lesson and select Edit Quiz. Apply changes in Question Settings or Quiz Settings with Done, then select the main Save. Reopen the quiz to check the saved result.
Review previous submissions before changing the questions. The marking view uses the quiz’s current questions. Editing a question changes what the reviewer reads, and removing an individual question can hide its old answer from that view even though the submitted response still exists. Review or download the response files you need before structural question changes.
Open Courses > course > Edit Course > Contents and the intended lesson. Identify the Quiz block you want to remove.
Point to the Quiz block and select its trash button, labelled Delete block. You can also open the block’s drag-handle menu and select Delete. Then select the lesson’s Save. This is different from Delete Question inside the quiz editor.
For a previously saved quiz, Delete Quiz? asks you to check the quiz name. It warns that saving the lesson will permanently delete the quiz and its questions, and says that responses students have already submitted are kept. Select Cancel to stop, or Delete Quiz & Save to confirm. If several saved quizzes were removed, the dialog is Delete Quizzes? and the confirmation is Delete Quizzes & Save. Removing a newly added, unsaved Quiz block does not need this confirmation.
Reopen the saved lesson to check that the block is gone. If the lesson saved but a quiz could not be deleted, follow the displayed warning and contact Cademy Support if the saved state is unclear; do not assume the whole save failed.
Removing a Quiz block keeps submitted responses. In this editor, its saved quiz data is retained for reviewing those responses. If another lesson still uses the quiz, it remains available there. This guidance covers removing a Quiz block in this editor. Before deleting the whole lesson or course, or changing assessments in the older editor, check with Cademy Support if you need to keep access to previous submissions. Review the responses and download any uploaded files you need before selecting Delete Quiz & Save. Once no published lesson in the course has a quiz, the Registration no longer lists quiz submissions. Manual responses still open from the Inbox, and the saved data is kept.
Frequently asked questions
Why can I not add a Quiz?
Check that the course is an On-demand online course or Blended course and that you have System Admin or Course Owner access to it. These steps use the newer course content editor’s / menu and Edit Quiz screen. If your saved course uses different controls, contact Cademy Support before changing existing assessments.
Why did a Long Text or File Upload answer pass without being reviewed?
The quiz is using Automatic Where Possible. These answers are accepted as correct when they meet the word-count or file rules. Change Marking to Manual if a person must review them.
Why is a manual submission missing from the Inbox?
Check the marking method used when the learner submitted. Automatic Where Possible saves a marked response without a manual-review conversation; read it on the learner’s Registration under Lesson Progress > Quiz Submission. Draft answers are not submitted responses. A Manual submission is listed there too, as Awaiting Marking until it is marked. If you cannot open its Quiz Response conversation in the Inbox, ask a System Admin to check your access to that conversation.
Why can the learner not select Submit Answers?
Every question must have an answer. For File Upload, the learner must finish uploading the minimum number of files.
Why did Cademy reject the submission after the learner selected Submit Answers?
For automatic marking, check Long Text word-count limits. For either marking method, check completed uploads, the permitted number of files and each file’s size. An enabled Submit Answers button is not confirmation of successful submission. If valid-looking answers are rejected, contact Cademy Support with the course, lesson, question type and exact error; avoid sending confidential answer contents.
Why can the learner not continue to the next lesson?
If Required to Complete the Lesson is on, the learner must pass the quiz; a pending manual response still needs marking. After passing, the learner uses Complete & Continue, or Mark as Completed on the final lesson, when all the lesson’s other requirements are met. A missing or locked lesson can also involve separate access or schedule conditions.
Why can I not submit answers in Preview as Student?
Quiz responses are disabled in admin preview. Follow Test a Course as a Learner to test submission, marking, retakes and saved progress.
Can I reuse a quiz in another lesson?
There is no separate Quiz library. Save the original lesson first, then use the lesson’s Duplicate for the same course or Copy to Course… for another on-demand or blended course. Those operations create separate copies of its available quizzes. Duplicating or copying and pasting a Quiz block is different and can keep the same quiz. Check the resulting Draft before publishing. See Create and Edit Lessons and Course Content for the complete lesson-copying steps.
Can I reset a learner's submitted quiz or used attempts?
There is currently no self-service reset control. A learner can submit another attempt only while retakes remain. Contact Cademy support for advice if the learner has no attempts left.
