Correct a Learner’s Lesson Progress

Correct one learner’s saved lesson status and understand the effects on Completion, dates, certificates, CPD and notifications.

Written by Artur Binzaru

Correct the lesson progress recorded for one learner on an On-demand or Blended course. Work from their Registration, meaning that person’s individual place on the course or course date.

Use the intended provider account as a System Admin, or as a Course Owner or Facilitator with access to the assigned course or date. The lesson correction changes the selected Registration’s progress; it does not change every place held by the same learner.

Check the consequences before choosing a status. This is an administrator correction: it can mark a lesson Completed without the learner passing a required quiz, finishing a SCORM package (uploaded online learning content), submitting a required form or completing earlier locked lessons. It does not create quiz answers, scores or submissions, reset quiz attempts, change SCORM results or saved package state, or submit a form. A Completed lesson is not evidence that the learner submitted its form. A correction can change course Completion and trigger eligible awards or configured completion feedback requests.

If the Registration came from an Order (a booking or purchase), a lesson marked Completed or In Progress also counts as recorded course progress in the customer’s own Cademy account. While any lesson on the Registration has one of those statuses, the Order’s primary contact (the Order Contact) cannot edit, replace or remove that participant, or transfer the place when it is their own, and the participant cannot change their own name or course-specific answers. See Manage Participants and View Their Course Progress and Certificates.

Change a lesson’s status

  1. Log in to the intended provider account. A System Admin can open the main Registrations page. Alternatively, select Courses, open a course within your access and select Registrants.

  2. Find the learner, check the course and date, and select the correct Registration row. Do not use the course-wide Lesson Progress tab for this procedure.

  3. In the Registration panel, expand Lesson Progress, then expand the named section containing the lesson.

  4. Check the lesson name and select its current status badge. Choosing a different status starts saving immediately, except when the Complete All Lessons? confirmation appears. There is no separate Save button. Choose Mark Completed, Mark In Progress or Mark Not Started, using the definitions below. The choice matching its current status is disabled.

  5. If the Complete All Lessons? dialog appears, check the named lesson and award warning; select Mark Completed only to confirm that one lesson, or Cancel to leave it unchanged.

  6. Wait for Lesson progress updated. The lesson controls remain unavailable while the save and refresh finish. Check the lesson badge and the percentage beside Lesson Progress.

  7. Refresh or reopen the Registration and check the saved lesson state and the separate Completion badge. Completion and awards can update in the background. If there is an error or the result is uncertain, check the current record before repeating the correction.

Open the lesson’s status badge inside the Registration’s Lesson Progress section. The current status is unavailable in the menu; this image shows the choices before a change.

The Complete All Lessons? warning can appear when completing this lesson would finish the remaining published lessons and automatic certificate issuing is enabled. Despite its title, it confirms the selected lesson; it does not complete every lesson in one action. The warning is conditional and does not appear before every correction or every possible award.

To check whether the learner submitted a form in a lesson, expand Lesson Progress and the section containing the lesson. A submitted form is listed under the lesson as Form Submission with a Submitted badge. System Admins and Course Owners can select Form Submission to open the response in Forms; Facilitators see the entry but cannot open it. See Add Forms to Lessons for form requirements and responses.

Understand the three lesson statuses

  • Completed: this lesson counts as completed for this Registration. When there is no existing lesson completion time, the correction records the current time; this control has no backdate picker.

  • In Progress: the lesson has a recorded start, but its completion is cleared and it no longer counts as a completed lesson.

  • Not Started: that lesson’s saved start and completion evidence are removed from the Registration. Its quiz and SCORM records are not reset.

Only valid published lessons contribute to the percentage. Draft or deleted lessons do not count. Change one lesson at a time; there is no bulk control here to change every lesson together. Later learner activity can update progress again, so an administrator correction is not a permanent lock.

This does not extend the learner’s course access or change publication, lesson scheduling or course settings. A saved lesson correction is not proof the learner can currently open the content.

How the change affects Registration Completion

A lesson’s In Progress label is different from the Registration’s Completion. A started lesson does not count as a completed lesson. Completion uses finished published-lesson evidence and, where applicable, attendance.

  • On-demand: 100% published-lesson progress can make the Registration Completed. At least one valid published lesson is needed. Moving progress backwards can return Completion to In Progress or Not Started.

  • Blended: 100% published-lesson progress is not enough while required live-session attendance is missing. Check that every required session is accurately marked Attended. If the course has no valid published online lessons, the attendance requirements can be enough.

The percentage is rounded to a whole number, and Completion uses that rounded figure. On a course with 200 or more valid published lessons, progress reaches 100% while at least one lesson is still unfinished, so the Registration can become Completed, and an automatic certificate can be issued, before every lesson is Completed. Check the individual lesson badges when that distinction matters. The Complete All Lessons? warning does not appear in that case: it checks whether every published lesson would actually be completed, not whether the rounded percentage reaches 100%.

Allow background processing, then refresh and check the actual result. Do not repeatedly toggle accurate progress to force a completion update. Historical or imported completion can be preserved until new attendance or completed-lesson evidence makes the current calculation take over.

Ordinary lesson corrections and re-completion keep the Registration’s first Completion Date. This is different from a lesson’s own completion time. Ask Support about an incorrect historical date rather than changing accurate lesson records to replace it.

Completion cannot be changed directly. For the full rules, see Understand Course Completion Status.

Certificates and CPD

A correction that makes the Registration Completed can lead to a certificate or CPD (continuing professional development) award when the separate course settings, account features and record eligibility allow it. A Blended course may still need attendance even after the certificate warning appeared.

Certificate notifications can reach the learner and an eligible Order primary contact, depending on the notification settings. Completion feedback requests can also be queued when configured and available. A saved lesson update or Completed badge does not guarantee that an award was issued or a message delivered.

A correction goes through the same Completion check as progress the learner records themselves, so it can lead to the same certificate, CPD award, certificate emails and completion feedback request. The learner does not see the Congratulations window: that appears only when the learner completes a lesson themselves and their On-demand course progress reaches 100%.

Moving progress backwards does not automatically revoke an issued certificate or CPD award, or retract an email. If an award should no longer remain active, revoke it separately, following the guides linked at the end of this section.

An existing active award is not automatically duplicated simply because Completion returns to Completed. A revoked award can return on a later completion check if the evidence still completes the Registration. Revoking an award does not change lesson progress, attendance or Completion. Automatic certificate reissue after an earlier revocation suppresses the usual learner and primary-contact notification.

See Set Up and Issue Course Certificates and Set Up and Award CPD Points and Hours for the full setup, eligibility and revocation procedures.

If the lesson controls are unavailable

  • Lesson Progress is missing: check that this is an On-demand or Blended course. The Registration panel does not show this section for other course types.

  • This course has no online lesson content. Check that you opened the intended course and that it has published lesson content. Ask the course owner or Support to check an unexpected empty section.

  • Unable to load course data. Refresh or reopen the record. If the message remains, ask Support to check the Registration and course.

  • The current menu choice is greyed out: that lesson already has that status. Do not toggle through another status just to repeat it. If all lesson controls are temporarily unavailable, wait for any save and refresh to finish.

  • The Registration is Cancelled: lesson progress is read-only while cancelled. Do not change the Registration’s lifecycle status just to make this correction without first establishing the intended booking outcome.

  • The Registration is missing: check the provider account, course/date scope, Search and filters; choose All Registrations where available. Ask a System Admin to check your course/date assignment if access is missing, or Support to help locate the existing record. Avoid creating a duplicate.

  • Failed to update lesson progress: read the details, refresh the Registration and check whether the lesson state changed. If it remains wrong or uncertain, contact Cademy Support with the Registration reference, lesson name and error before repeating an action that might affect completion or awards.

Frequently asked questions

Can I mark every lesson Completed at once?
No. This Registration panel changes one lesson at a time. Complete All Lessons? is a conditional confirmation for the selected remaining lesson, not a bulk-complete button.

Can I choose a different completion date?
No. This control has no backdate picker; it records a new lesson completion time when the correction is saved if no prior time exists. The Registration’s first Completion Date is separate and remains through ordinary corrections and re-completion. Ask Support to check a disputed historical date.

Does Mark Completed pass a quiz for the learner?
No. It changes the Registration’s lesson progress without creating or changing quiz answers, scores or submissions. It does not reset quiz attempts or record/reset SCORM results. Use the correction only when that administrative change is intended.

Why is a blended Registration still In Progress at 100% lesson progress?
The required live-session attendance must also be complete. Check every required session and correct only inaccurate marks, then allow processing and refresh Completion. The lesson update message is not confirmation of an attendance or award outcome.

Why does the learner still have a certificate after I selected Mark Not Started?
Changing lesson progress does not automatically revoke awards or retract emails. Revoke an award separately only when required; see Certificates and CPD for the guides. Revoking does not lower Completion, and a later check can reissue an award if the evidence still completes the Registration.

Can I change a cancelled Registration?
You cannot change its lesson progress while it is Cancelled. Ask Support about an inaccurate record; this restriction does not mean every other field on the Registration is read-only.
