Create a Blended Course With Dates and Online Lessons

Combine live or in-person sessions on set dates with self-paced e-learning lessons in one hybrid course, then set prices, access and test it.

Written by Artur Binzaru

A Blended course combines sessions on set dates with self-paced online lessons, for example classroom days with e-learning modules, or a live session with pre-course work and a follow-up lesson. The sessions can be in person, online or hybrid. Learners book, or are added to, a course date, and you can host the lessons in Cademy or give access instructions for another platform.

This guide is for course providers. A Registration is one learner's place on the course; an Order records the booking and its payment. A block is a set of sessions booked together; a block alone does not need the Blended course type.

Permission needed: You need System Admin access or Course Owner access to the course. Facilitators cannot open the course editor. Ask a System Admin to check your access if an action is missing.

Create the Blended Course in Admin

  1. Open the Cademy admin dashboard and select Courses.

  2. Select Create New.

  3. Under Which keyword best describes this service?, choose the word your business uses for courses (the service keyword). Then select Blended course under What is the format?

  4. In Description, enter the course title where you see Add your title here. Use Add Course Images to choose images, then replace the description placeholder with the details customers need before booking.

  5. Select Save and check for Course saved. The course is saved but stays unpublished.

  6. Continue through Pricing & Delivery, Dates, Contents, Settings and Share as described below. Share appears after the course has been saved.

Create New screen with a Back button, the question Which keyword best describes this service? answered Course, and under What is the format? the four choices On set dates, On-request, On-demand online course and Blended course, each with Learn more; Blended course is highlighted

To return later, open Courses, select the course and select Edit Course. In the course list you can also open the course's menu and select Edit or Settings. Changing tabs on a new course also tries to save it, and moving around an existing course editor can save outstanding changes, so review your choices before switching pages.

Set the Default Price, Places and Delivery

  1. In the course editor, open Pricing & Delivery.

  2. Under Delivery Method, select In-person, Online or Hybrid.

  3. Set the address or online hosting details shown for that delivery method. Online hosting offers Add Join URL Manually or Use Zoom App; the Zoom option needs a connected account.

  4. Enter the default Max Spaces, which is the total number of places.

  5. Enter the Price and check the currency shown. Use 0 for a free offer. If offer cards are already shown, select an offer to edit its price.

  6. For another offer, select Custom Offers & Add-ons if the expanded list is not shown, then Add Price → Create an Offer. Enter the Name and Price. Select Create Price; when editing an existing offer, select Update Price.

  7. Select Save and check for Course saved.

These are defaults for new dates. You can give a date or block a different delivery method, location, number of places, price or facilitator when you add or edit its dates. See Set Places and Prices for All Dates or Just One Date.

Add the Dates of the Live or Classroom Sessions

  1. Open Dates in the course editor. If the course has no saved dates, the calendar opens automatically. If you see a list of saved dates, select Add dates.

  2. Select each day in the calendar. The selected dates appear in the editing list.

  3. Review each date's start time, end time and time zone.

  4. Under How are the dates booked?, choose Individually, Block or Block or Individually. The block choices become available after at least two dates have been added.

  5. To override the defaults, select Change Default Settings, Spaces, Location or Price, or Change Defaults on smaller screens. Review the delivery, places, price, facilitators and visibility for these dates.

  6. Select Save Date or Save Dates. Check for Updates saved and confirm the dates appear in the returned list. This is separate from the course's own Save.

Add dates window of the course editor: a calendar with 14 and 15 October 2026 selected, two rows under Selected Dates, the choices under How are the dates booked and the Change Default Settings, Spaces, Location or Price button
  • Individually: customers choose and book one date.

  • Block: customers book all dates in the block together.

  • Block or Individually: customers can book the complete block or a single date.

Normal booking needs an available date. With no bookable dates, the page can show a waitlist, date requests or group requests according to the course settings. If none of these is turned on, it shows No upcoming dates.

To change saved dates and blocks, read Add or Change Course Dates and Multi-Session Blocks.

Add Online Lessons, Pre-Course Work and Follow-Up Lessons

In the course editor, open Contents to create the Cademy-hosted part of the course. Learners on different course dates use the same sections and lessons.

You can set a lesson to open or fall due before or after each learner's booked course starts or ends. For example, make preparation due two days before the course starts and open a follow-up lesson one day after it ends. Learners booked on different dates get different lesson timings from the same lesson settings.

Open the lesson and select Schedule, or its saved timing summary, to set Opens and Due. Course-date options use the first and last sessions of a whole-block booking. A lesson that opens relative to a course date stays locked until the learner has a usable booked date and its opening time is reached, and any required earlier work is complete. See Release Lessons Over Time and Set Due Dates for the full setup, examples and rescheduling rules.

The Schedule dialog for a lesson on a blended course, with Opens set to 2 hours after the course ends, Due set to 7 days after the course ends, and a preview of both times for the 13 Oct date.

Use Build and Organise Lessons in an Online Course for the full editor: sections, lessons, content blocks, quizzes, SCORM packages (learning content made with an external authoring tool), lesson schedules, saving, previewing and copying a lesson to another course.

Use a Form block to collect General or Feedback responses inside an online lesson. Feedback forms are listed when feedback is turned on for your business account. See Add Forms to Lessons. Submitting a form or completing an online lesson does not replace the course's required attendance. If the course has no published lesson, attending every session of the booked date completes the learner's Registration.

Course and lesson publishing are separate. The course must be available to the right audience, and each lesson must be Published before eligible learners can see it. Opening times and required earlier lessons still control when a learner can open a lesson.

Host the Online Content on Another Website (Host Externally)

  1. In the course editor, open Settings → Advanced Settings.

  2. Turn on Host Externally.

  3. Under Content Access Details, enter the external website link, login steps and other learner instructions.

  4. Select Save and check for Course saved.

This changes where learners complete the content. It is separate from External Bookings, which sends customers to another website to book; see Send Customers to an External Booking Website.

For a place linked to an order, approval alone does not make these instructions available: the order must also meet the payment requirement for course access. This can include a paid deposit or first monthly instalment, or access before invoice or in-person payment when you allow it. Cancelled places and orders refunded in full do not grant access. See Find Your Course Dates, Venue or Joining Link for the conditions and learner steps.

Set Learner Access and Publish the Course

Set How Long Learners Keep Access to the Online Lessons

  1. In the course editor, open Settings, then Access Options.

  2. Under Students should have access to the course, choose Indefinitely / until removed by you or For a limited time. The last word of that label follows the course's service keyword.

  3. For limited access, enter the Number of days.

  4. Select Save and check for Course saved.

This is the course-wide access rule. Changing it can affect existing learners who have no separate expiry on their Registration or Order. To set a different expiry for one learner, open their Registration and edit Access expires. See Set or Extend How Long Learners Can Access a Course.

Publish and Share the Blended Course

Before publishing, open Settings → Booking Options and check Cancellation Policy: the account default or a named policy. See Set Cancellation and Rescheduling Policies. Select Save and check for Course saved.

To help customers find the course, open Settings → Advanced Settings and review Categories & Tags and Search Details (the course level and the description shown on search engines and social media). See Add Categories and Tags to Courses.

Before changing visibility, follow Publish and Share a Course to check your account's allowance, any payment setup and the full publishing steps.

  1. In the course editor, open Share.

  2. Use the visibility control to choose Public, Private or Unpublished. Public is visible to all. Private is hidden and reached with a direct link, on plans that include private courses (see What Each Cademy Plan Includes and Costs). Unpublished stays available to you and enrolled users.

  3. For a published course, use the course link or the sharing and embed options.

Test What Learners See Before Launch

Open Edit Course → Contents and use Preview as Student. Save the course first. If Save Before Previewing? appears, choose Save & Preview for your changes, Preview Without Saving for the last saved version, or Cancel to stay in the editor. Check the new tab shows Previewing as admin. Progress is not tracked. For a System Admin or Course Owner of this course, Preview as Student opens admin preview even if the same login also has a Registration. If the banner is missing, stop and check which page and login you are using.

Admin preview does not prove a learner's scheduled access, a course-date booking or its joining details. A full test needs a real Registration, Order or public booking for the chosen course date, using a separate learner email without administrator access. These create records and can use places or send messages. Follow Test a Course Before Launch.

Review Registrations and Lesson Progress

Before changing lesson progress, follow Reset or Correct a Learner's Lesson Progress. It covers the correction steps and the effect on completion, certificates and CPD (continuing professional development).

Frequently Asked Questions

How is a blended course different from other course types?
A blended course combines scheduled sessions with self-paced learning content. An On-demand online course has no required attendance date. On set dates is for scheduled sessions without a Contents area. Hybrid describes a mix of in-person and online delivery; it does not by itself make the course Blended.

Why can I not see Create New or Edit Course?
System Admins and Course Owners can create and edit blended courses. Facilitators cannot open the course editor. Ask a System Admin for your business account to check your access.

Why does the public course page show a waitlist?
The waitlist can appear when it is turned on and there are no bookable dates or the available dates are full. Check the dates, their booking availability and places. Date and group request buttons can also appear when turned on.

Can different dates have different prices, locations or numbers of places?
Yes. The values in Pricing & Delivery are defaults. Set different values for each date or block using Add or Change Course Dates and Multi-Session Blocks. When you edit several saved dates together, only the settings you change are applied, so a private date stays private unless you change its visibility. The Visibility box shows Public even then; leave it unless you mean to change it.

Why can a registered learner not see a lesson?
Check that the learner has the right Registration for the course date, the lesson is Published, its release time has been reached, any previous-lesson requirement is complete, their access has not expired and the course is not archived. If a lesson opens relative to the booked course date and the Registration has no valid course date, it stays locked: the content outline shows Awaiting Date and the lesson shows Waiting for your course date. Check the Registration's date and whether that date still exists.

Can I reuse a lesson in another blended or on-demand course?
Yes. Open the lesson's actions and select Copy to Course…. The copy arrives as a Draft in the destination course. Read Build and Organise Lessons in an Online Course before copying.

Can I change an existing course to or from Blended?
Yes, if the course has no registrations or orders. If it already has them, duplicate the course and change the copy's type instead. Read Change a Course Type first.
