Write Clear Course and Business Descriptions

Write accurate business information, course titles and descriptions, then save and check how customers see them.

Written by Artur Binzaru

Use this guide to improve the business information, titles and descriptions customers read before choosing a course. The editing steps are for courses you have already created in Cademy.

A System Admin is a staff member with full access to your provider account and can update the business profile. A Course Owner can manage courses they create or are assigned to. Course editing requires Course Owner or System Admin access to the intended account and course.

Start with accurate information

Write for someone who has never heard of your business. Explain what you offer, who it is for and what the learner will do. Clear information helps readers judge whether a course suits them; it does not guarantee enquiries or bookings.

A minisite is the public website Cademy provides for your business. Use the same accuracy checks for text on your own website. If you maintain separate wording there, review that wording too.

Write your business description

Describe your services clearly

Start with the subjects you teach and the people you help. Use familiar subject names rather than a list of promotional phrases. Include relevant teaching experience, your approach and what makes your service different, but only when you can support those details.

Fictional example: “Northbank Training runs practical leadership workshops for new managers. Participants discuss workplace situations and practise giving feedback in small groups.” Use this structure with your own accurate facts.

Update the business description in Cademy

The business description belongs to the provider’s public About page. It is separate from the description of an individual course.

If Some features are temporarily limited is shown and About us page is disabled, the field is restricted for the account. Ask Cademy Support about the restriction before trying to update it.

  1. Open Profile in Cademy Admin and check the business account.

  2. In Profile Details, edit About us page. Keep the business introduction focused on the services you actually offer.

  3. Review any other pending changes on Profile, then select Save Changes. Check for Changes saved. or an error. This saves the other pending ordinary profile fields too.

  4. After a successful save, select View Your Public Site and open About. On a narrow screen, use the eye button. Read the saved description as a customer would.

For other profile settings, see Update Your Business Profile and Minisite.

Write the course title and description

Make the title specific

Name the subject first. Add the audience, level or format when it helps distinguish the course. Avoid repeating the same subject words just to fill the title.

Fictional example: “Leadership Workshop” becomes “Leadership Skills for New Managers”. Use “Advanced Leadership Skills for Managers” only if the course really is advanced. Words such as Workshop, Seminar or Masterclass should describe the delivery accurately.

If every date uses one location, a place name can help readers, for example “Project Management Workshop in London”. Leave a fixed place out if the course runs in different locations. Include “Certification” only when the course actually provides the stated certification.

Match the topics and level to the course

Use concrete subject names in the copy, such as leadership development, project management, communication skills or data analytics, when those subjects are taught. Check that the title, description and selected course level agree. Do not describe a beginner course as advanced to make it sound more appealing.

If you use course categories and tags, choose ones that match what the course teaches. To create them and add them to a course, see Course Categories and Course Tags.

Explain what the learner will do

  • Who the course is for and what prior knowledge or preparation is needed.

  • The main topics and activities, with specific skills learners will practise.

  • How the course is delivered, and any materials or support included.

  • What learners can reasonably expect to learn, and any assessment or qualification actually included.

Fictional example: “In this workshop for new managers, you will practise giving clear feedback and plan a one-to-one conversation.” This describes the activity without promising a promotion or business result.

Use short paragraphs and useful headings. Keep dates, venues, prices and included materials consistent with the course’s actual settings. Rewriting the description does not change those settings.

Review your wording and any other pending course edits before saving or changing editor sections. Changing sections within an existing course can also save pending edits. Use Save and check the result before moving on.

  1. In Cademy Admin, open Courses and select the course you want to update.

  2. Select Edit Course, then open Description.

  3. Edit the title at the top of the page. An empty title field shows Add your title here.

  4. Click a text paragraph in the description below the course images and edit its wording. An empty paragraph shows Type a paragraph when selected. Keep the text about the course customers are choosing, rather than private lesson instructions.

  5. Select Save and check for Course saved. If an error appears, resolve it before treating the change as saved.

Write the search and social summary

The Search engine & social media description is a short course summary supplied for page information used by search and social services. Write one concise sentence about the subject and audience. About 140 characters is a useful guide; the field does not count characters or stop you at a limit. It does not replace the full course description, and it does not guarantee a particular ranking or the exact wording a service displays.

On your minisite, the summary is the page description of the course page. Minisite pages ask search engines not to include them in search results. If you use Cademy for WordPress, the summary is also the meta description of the course page on your own website; see Cademy for WordPress: Embed Courses on Your Website.

Fictional example: “Practise feedback and one-to-one conversations in a leadership workshop for new managers.” Keep the summary consistent with the title and course description.

  1. In Cademy Admin, open Courses, select the existing course and choose Edit Course.

  2. Open Settings, then select Advanced Settings.

  3. Find Search Details. Check Level first; the options are All, Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced. Choose the level that matches the course.

  4. Enter the summary in Search engine & social media description.

  5. Review any other pending course edits, then select Save and check for Course saved or an error.

Use AI as a writing aid

If you use a writing tool such as ChatGPT, give it accurate course facts and ask for a clearer title or shorter description. For example, “Suggest three plain-language titles for a data analytics course for business managers. Do not add qualifications or learning outcomes.”

Treat the result as a draft. Check every claim, remove invented details and adjust the wording to sound like your business. You remain responsible for the title, audience, level, location, qualifications and outcomes you publish.

Use qualifications and reviews accurately

Mention relevant qualifications and experience only when accurate. If you include a testimonial, use genuine feedback that you have permission to quote, and keep its meaning intact. Do not invent reviews.

For Cademy’s feedback and review tools, see Set Up a Feedback Form for Your Courses.

Check the saved presentation

After saving an existing published course, use the arrow button labelled Open in new tab at the top of the course editor to open its course page. Read the title and description, then check the pages on your minisite or own website where you share the course. Check a small screen as well as a larger one.

The Open in new tab button is shown for published courses. For an unpublished course, reopen its saved Description in Admin to check the text. Publishing is a separate task; see Publish, Share and Archive a Course.

Check the saved search and social summary by returning to Settings → Advanced Settings → Search Details. A search result or social preview is not proof that your latest summary has been saved, and saving it does not promise an immediate external preview update.

If saved wording is not visible, first check that the relevant save completed without an error, then refresh the page you are checking. If the mismatch remains, contact Cademy Support with the course or profile, the wording you saved and the page where it differs.

Final writing check

  • Can a new reader identify the subject, audience and level?

  • Does the business description explain what you offer without unsupported claims?

  • Do the title, description, summary and actual course settings agree?

  • Are the learning activities and included materials clear?

  • Have you checked every qualification, testimonial and AI-assisted sentence?

  • Have you saved the changes and checked the relevant customer-facing pages?
